As the quintessential Vermont village, with the requisite white church and steeple, Stowe has been a favorite of our family for many years. My kids learned to ski there when they were 4 years old. While we had been back many times over the years, it has been some time since we had all been together, this time with my wife, daughter, her husband, my granddaughter, my son and his new fiancée. We rented a spectacular cabin just outside of town that looked like it came from a magazine.

Much has changed in Stowe, but much has stayed the same; we snowshoed the Recreation Path to The Shed for burgers and beers, had hot cider and lunch at The Whip, apres ski at The Matterhorn and dinner at Trattoria de Festa. Old friends….

What’s new is dramatic and welcome. The Spruce Peak area, long an also ran to Mt. Mansfield has been transformed into a world class resort. A new high speed lift to the top of Spruce Mountain, new snowmaking, a wonderful golf course carved through the mountains and the spectacular Stowe Mountain Lodge with its shops and restaurants, make this a resort to rival anything out West.

Also new in town, a delicious Mexican restaurant called Frida’s serving authentic food, killer guacamole, great margaritas and a wonderful selection of tequilas. Santo’s on the Mountain Road, featuring a blend of Puerto Rican, Cuban and other Latin influences. We didn’t get there on our early 2010 visit, but the “buzz” is big!
